Yes. Joining the beta and playing ranked games is free. There's an optional Premium plan with extras like deep stats and cosmetics, but you never need it to play.

You start with a few placement games. After that, every confirmed result moves your rank points. Beat a higher-ranked player and you gain more; win by a bigger margin and you gain a bit more. Both players have to confirm the score, so nobody can fake their way up.
